How Much Walking Is Good For Health?

Walking has incredible benefits on one's health. Famous Greek Physician Hippocrates once said that “Walking is man's best medicine”. As said by Hippocrates walking is really a great way to improve the overall health of a person. The sayings by Hippocrates centuries ago are still valid even when the world is being ruled over by the robust technological advancements.

Many people maintain good health because of a regular brisk walk. Just 30 minutes of walking every day is enough to maintain a good health. However, excess walking and physical exercising can also cause some difficulties such as chronic knee or joint pain. Excess walking may lead to knee conditions like tendinitis, bursitis or wear and tear of the knee. Some people overdo it and suffer from swelling too.If one has the following issues, then these are the signs that he/she should stop walking:

  • Sudden swelling
  • Severe knee pain that can't handle
  • Can't stand stably
  • Inflammation and soreness

Things To Note Before You Start Walking

  • Make sure you have good shoes. Wearing the wrong type of shoes or wrong walking actions can cause pain and injuries to soft tissue
  • Walk at a comfortable intensity
  • Increase the length and pace of walking gradually
  • Take a rest between walks. Do stretching exercises that relax your muscles and bones
  • Maintain a healthy weight

Get Help If You Need

  • If you feel soreness and swelling after a long walk, lie down with your legs raised. Take complete rest and avoid physical activities that put pressure on the knee for the next 48 hours. To reduce swelling and to alleviate knee pain, use ice packs. Keep ice packs on the knees for about 15 to 20 minutes, three times a day.
  • If the pain persist compression therapy may help. Use an elastic bandage to wrap around the knees to get relieved from pain. Do not wrap it too tight and remove it before taking a shower and while sleeping.
  • If swelling persists for many days and if you have intense knee pain or instability to stand, seek medical assistance immediately. Walking is an excellent exercise for people of all ages but follow these suggestions to make your walking experience convenient and painless.
