Stiff and Swollen Shoulder

Swelling of the shoulder joint is very common condition that may occur due to wrong posture while sitting or lying down. In these cases, the swelling and stiffness is temporary that goes on its own or with some physical exercises. But other than these, if stiffness and swelling is accompanied by other symptoms too, it may be a cause of concern. Shoulder joint may become firm and swell due to accumulation of the excessive fluid in or around the joint. It may be temporary but may cause long-term discomfort if left untreated.

Causes:

Stiffness and swelling in shoulder joint mainly occurs due to injury like shoulder fracture, dislocation, or sprain, overuse injuries, infection or chronic, debilitating conditions like ankylosing spondylitis, inflammatory bursitis, juvenile arthritis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, tendinitis etc.

Symptoms:

Swelling of the shoulder joint causes it’s puffing up that is easily noticeable and comparable with the normal shoulder. This is generally accompanied with stiffness or difficulty to do simple activities like lifting arm, taking something from upper drawer etc. In addition to this, shoulder becomes extremely painful and unable to move. A clicking or popping sound may be heard on moving the joint.
