Platelet Rich Plasma ( PRP) treatment

Date :05-Sep-2020

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is that part of the human blood, consisting of proteins to help cellular growth and that which helps in the formation of blood clots, helping in the body’s healing process.

Plasma is the liquid portion of the blood consisting mainly of water and acts as a channel for the blood cells, both red and white, and the platelets, to circulate through the body. Platelets are the actual blood cells that help in growth and clot formation.

PRP treatment is an alternative to surgery and also a healing process. It consists of injecting the person’s own blood back into the ailing part of the body to boost the healing process.

The process involves using a local anaesthetic to numb the area; use ultrasound to check and confirm the area to be treated and then the injection. But first, a small amount of the patient’s own blood is taken, then a centrifuge is used to concentrate the platelets. While the time taken depends on the targeted area, it usually is over in about 30 minutes. Once in the body, the platelets start releasing growth factors that activate the healing process.

These are most commonly used to treat/repair torn tendons, inflammation of tendons, muscle injuries and also arthritis and joint related injuries/diseases. However, these days, they are also used for cosmetic procedures like treating hair loss in both men and women.

Some of the key advantages include; drastically reduced usage of pain killing and anti-inflammatory medication and extremely limited side effects as the blood is the patient’s own blood and extremely unlikely to be rejected by the body.

These are usually done in a single visit to the doctor and the patient can resume normal life immediately. There is no scar tissue, very little or no pain and fast recovery.
