Managing osteoporosis during Covid-19

Date :23-Jun-2020

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organisation officially declared Covid-19 outbreak as a pandemic, and the whole world, quite literally, went into a lockdown. And turned everybody’s life upside down, but, the most affected were those with existing medical conditions like Osteoporosis.

This is a condition when the bone becomes weak and brittle. The body is constantly absorbing and replacing the bone. With osteoporosis, the replacement does not keep up with absorption.

Taking into account the needs of hygiene and social distancing, the following are some recommendations by experts in the field to manage osteoporosis.

  1.  Those taking medication should continue to do without fail. There is no evidence to show any relationship between these 2 diseases. However, caution is advised with estrogen and raloxifene therapies.
  2.  Patients with high fracture risk rates should not delay oral biosphopate therapy.
  3.  Bone mineral density examinations may be delayed, if necessary, but not put off.
  4.  When the patient’s lab results for IV bisphosphonates for the previous year are normal, the tests for the current year may be skipped. However, those with kidney issues and/or low blood calcium levels MUST NOT SKIP the tests.
  5.  Those taking medication via injections need to seek alternate ways to hospital/clinic visits, like home delivery and administration by healthcare professionals; use off site clinics or as a last resort self application.
  6.  For those unable to receive IV biphosphate treatments, it can be delayed

Given the rapidly changing situation and the resulting lack of information, these recommendations should be considered general guidance only.
Always consult with your physician before taking any action.
